Garda station no longer ‘fit for purpose’ - Scanlon

-

Eamon Scanlon TD wants Tubbercurry Garda Station to be relocated to the building next door, which is currently for sale.

Deputy Scanlon explained, “The current Garda Station in Tubbercurry was built in 1960 and was designed to house one sergeant and two Gardaí.

“There are now two sergeants and 10 Gardaí stationed there and the building is no longer fit for purpose,” Scanlon said.

He coninued: “Tubbercurry is one of the busiest stations in the Sligo-Leitrim division and the current conditions are making it difficult for officers to carry out their day to day duties.

“There is a building – the former offices of CLÁR – which is now up for sale and would be an ideal location for the Garda Station.

“The OPW intends to purchase land to renovate the Garda Station and improve conditions for staff.

“The former CLÁR building presents an ideal opportunity. It’s being sold by a bank and could be bought for a fair price.

“I raised this proposal with Minister Charlie Flanagan in the Dáil this week and he agreed to engage with me on the issue. According to the Minister, “the Garda Síochána Inspectorate, at the request of the Policing Authority, will carry out a detailed review of the dispersal and use of resources in delivering policing services to the communities”.

“I will follow up this issue with Minister Flanagan, which will hopefully result in the acquisition of a new building for the Garda Station so that Gardaí can carry out their work in safe and appropriate conditions”.
