Sligo native to be High Court Judge
ONE of the country’s leading criminal barristers, Tara Burns, a native of Sligo has been nominated for appointment as a Judge of the High Court.
Senior Counsel Tara Burns was nominated for the position at last Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
Ms Burns became a barrister in 1995 and was practising on the Midland Circuit before becoming a senior counsel in 2013.
She has appeared for both the defence and prosecution in a number of high profile criminal trials in Dublin in recent years and represented former head of the Garda press office Superintendent Dave Taylor at the Disclosures Tribunal which is ongoing at Dublin Castle.
Ms Burns, who now lives in Dublin, is a daughter of the late Dermot and Bernie Burns of Heather View, Sligo and up to recently she owned a house on Cairns Hill.
The late Mr Burns was a well known builder in the Sligo area.
Ms Burns is a former pupil of Mercy College, Sligo and is the first female Sligo native to become a High Court Judge.
