NAOMH EOIN HURLING

WE hosted the Group D Division 7 games for the John West National Feile na nGael Hurling competition last weekend in glorious weather and conditions, with Round 1 and 2 games being played at Kent Park on Friday evening involving our guest club for the weekend Cootehill Celtic from Cavan, Castlebar Mitchels, Clara/Brosna Gaels from Offaly and our own U-14 hurlers.

It turned out to be a great exhibition of hurling with the Offaly team proving to be a cut above the other three teams, who were all quite evenly matched, which made for some exciting contests.

This was borne out by the results with Cootehill Celtic peforming a fantastic comeback to pip Castlebar Mitchels in the opening game 0-6 to 1-2. In the next game the combined Offaly team of Clara and Brosna Gaels had too much for a gallant Naomh Eoin winning out in a high scoring game.

This was followed by the best game of the session with Naomh Eoin leading Castlebar Mitchels before their Mayo counterparts struck over a disputed free on the whistle to finish on a tie 2-3 to 1-6. Robert O’Kelly-Lynch wowed the big crowd with a fabulous solo run and strike which was then finished into the net by Cathal Shovelin with Naomh Eoin leading 2-3 to 1-3 with 10 minutes to go but Castlebar fought back with three points to give both teams a share of the points.

On Saturday afternoon we travelled up to the Connacht GAA Centre near Ballynhaunis to compete in the Shield quarter-finals and came up against a very accomplished Ennistymon team from Clare who went on to win the Shield final on Sunday. Our guest team Cootehill Celtic were also defeated in the Cup quarter-final by Roscommon Gaels who reached the Division 7 final only to lose to our group winners Clara/Brosna Gaels. So we can say we were put out by the two final winners for our division.

Naomh Eoin Feile panel: Shea O’Neill, Stefan Roche, James Hargadon, John Mackey, Corey O’Dowd, Oiléan Mulligan, Brendan Munnelly, Rory Kinane, John Corcoran, Dara Mostyn, Robert O’Kelly-Lynch, Conor Mostyn, Ronan Niland, Cathal Shovelin, Harry Cawley, Thomas Hargadon, Aodhán Shovelin, and Matthew Mullholand. Team Mentor: Bill O’Kelly-Lynch.

ST MARY’S

OUR U12 boys had an extremely busy week. Following last weekends Clifford cup we were back in league action on Thursday evening away to St Molaise Gaels. On the evening both of our sides came unstuck with our division one team falling to a 20-6 defeat and our division three losing 19-10. For the second year in a row we traveled to the Ardara invitational tournament on Saturday. Both teams were very competitive with our younger lads getting to the shield final and the older team losing out on score difference. We had a fantastic day and many thanks goes to the Ardara club for a great day.

After a 4 week break, the U-14 Girls were back in action last week with 2 games.

On Tuesday evening we traveled to Oranmore Gaels for a tough match.

In the first 10 minuets we show signs of lack of match practice. Soon the Girls starts to find their feet at midfield and deliver some excellent balls into their forwards who started to find gaps in the opposition defense,

Scoring some excellent points and goals.

With our defense working very hard to keep the opposition at bay.

St. Mary’s started the second half in flying form, with players running at the owenmore Gaels defense and some brilliant scoring the Girls pulled away for a big win.

Good game practice for the upcoming Feile competition.

On Friday evening we then traveled to Ballisodare to take on a under strength Ballisodare team. The Girls were quickly of the mark, with some excellent performances throughout the field, the Girls lead comfortably at half time.

The second half was much of the same, with the Girls running out comfortably winning.

The score line did not reflect the massive effort put in by Ballisodare.

U12 girls who played in the A League Shield Final on Saturday in Tubbercurry. Unfortunately they lost 11-5. After exiting qtr1 2-1 ahead a strong Coolera side gradually pulled away. The girls played well in all positions and worked extremely hard.. they did St Mary’s proud!

CALRY/ST JOSEPH’S

OUR pitch is open for business again after getting some vital maintenance and the first action on it will be the re-scheduled “Hugh McLoughlin” tournament which takes place this coming Saturday when a host of young teams from across the region take part in a “Skills and Games” contest in memory of this great man who played such a key role in the development of underage games in our Club.

Action gets underway from 11am at our main pitch in Hazelwood.

Not much luck on the playing fields this week with our u/12 girls losing out to Naomh Molaise Gaels in their “Shield “league final.

The girls put in a tremendous effort but unfortunately just came up against a better team on the day.

The juniors lost out to a well drilled Coolaney/Mullinabreena team on Saturday also while the Seniors suffered a heavy defeat to Easkey on Sunday.

The ever improving u/12 hurlers play Coolera/Strandhill in Ransboro this evening (Tuesday) at 7pm.

Club Lotto draw results:- Jackpot €6,800, numbers drawn 2, 6, 14, 18,- no winner. No match three winner.

Promoters prize winner Liam O Boyle, Fivemilebourne, Calry.

Next draw is on Wed 27th June 2018 with a Jackpot of €6,850.

We send our heartfelt sympathies to the McCarrick and Dunleavy Families, Cartron Est, on the tragic and untimely passing of Ross.

May his gentle Soul rest in Heavenly Peace. FÉILE 2018 last weekend had everything: sun, sea, new friendships and some terrific hurling! It will go down as a weekend to remember for the Benbulben Gaels Under 14 hurlers who took part.

We were delighted to host East Cavan Gaels on Friday and Saturday, who eventually went on to lift the Shield title in Bekan on Sunday.

Big congrats to the Rathcormac NS girls footballers who won the 8-Teacher+ Cumann na mBunscol final against Ballymote last Tuesday.

A special mention too for team captain Rianne Smith, who has been selected to play in the Cumann na mBunscol half-time exhibition on All-Ireland senior football final Sunday at Croke Park (Sept 2nd).

The Cumann na mBunscol exertions appeared to their toll on the DRP U14 girls footballers who were beaten by CT Gaels in the league later that evening by 6-10 to 2-9.

Hard luck to the girls U12 footballers who were beaten by Curry in last Saturday’s Shield final, played in Tubbercurry.

There was a disappointing display from the senior men’s footballers in Division 1 last Sunday in Coola as they lost to Shamrock Gaels in Division 1 on a final scoreline of 2-11 to 0-6.

The attention now switches to the Kiernan Cup this Sunday when we welcome St Mary’s to Oxfield at 1pm.

Our junior men’s footballers fared better in Collooney on Friday, beating Owenmore Gaels in Division 4 by 6-15 to 1-6. Next up is a home game against Castleconnor on Saturday evening at 7pm.

There is a midweek blitz for our nursery U8 and U10 footballers this Wednesday evening (June 7th) with St John’s GAA Club in Cleveragh playing fields (opposite the sports complex) at 7pm. Players are asked to assemble by 6:45pm.

ST MOLAISE GAELS

CONGRATULATIONS to our U12 Girls and their Coaches on winning the B league Shield final against Calry/St Joseph’s in Tubbercurry on Saturday last.

Our U12 Boys Squads had a busy week. On Tuesday both sides defeated their Tubberrcurry/Cloonacool counterparts away while their was further league success on Thursday at home to St Mary’s. On Saturday both squads made the trip to Ardara to take part in the Mick Herron Tournament but a tough week of football caught up with lads and despite some good performances they did not feature in the final stages of their competitions.

It was a different story on Bank Holiday Monday when at the same venue in the prestigious Joe Larry Tournament involving 26 Clubs our U9 Boys won their Cup competition while our U10 squad made the semi final. well done to our U9 Boys and Coaches on their superb displays on the day.

Our senior men went down 2-19 to 2-16 away to Coolaney/Mullinabreena on Sunday last in the 7th round of the League. Gaels will rue a poor start to the game which saw them behind 0-07 to 0--01 after 12 minutes. A goal before half time saw the margin down to three .

A much improved second half display saw Gaels work hard to reduce the deficit to just one point by the 59th minute thanks to an Alan McLoughlin goal but it was the home side who finished strongly to emerge winners.

Luke Towey and Darren Gilsenan were outstanding for Gaels with Daragh Gallagher and Paddy McGowan also prominent. This Sunday at 1.00pm the team are away to Shamrock Gaels in the Kiernan Cup.

On Saturday evening our Mens Development squad continued their good league form with a comprehensive home win against Coolera./Strandhill.

This Saturday evening June 16th they play away to Calry/St Joseph’s at 7.00pm.

Our U14 Girls played out a thrilling game at home to Calry/ St Joseph’s on Tuesday evening last. Only a last minute goal for the visitors secured the win but great credit is due to both sides for the quality of football they produced in what was definitely one of the games of the season to date at Monsignor Hynes Park.

Other Club action this week sees our U12 Hurlers at home to Castleconnor on Tuesday evening at 7.00pm while on Thursday evening our U14 Boys are away to St Mary’s also at 7.00pm.
