The Sligo Champion

Schlingermann departs Bit O’Red

SLIGO Rovers have announced that goalkeeper Micheál Schlingermann has left the club.

The 26-year-old began his career at Rovers before moving on to Athlone in 2010 and then spending spells at Monaghan and Drogheda United.

A former Mayo footballer, Micheál signed on at the Showgrounds for a second time following a successful 2015 season at ‘the Drogs’, where he was named in the PFAI Team of the Year.

The Kiltimagh native tallied just six appearances this season and 56 in total before losing his place to on-loan net minder Mitchell Beeney, who Rovers are keen to sign on full-time.

Commenting on Schlingermann’s departure, Rovers boss Ger Lyttle told the Sligo Champion: “It was a very difficult decision for both of us. But that’s football and that happens. Micheál struggled with injury this season so it was a stop-start season for him.

But Mitchell’s come in and he’s got the number one shirt and Ed McGinty had the number two. Micheál had to be patient but obviously at his age he needs to play more. He took it upon himself to say ‘I need to play’ so I admire him for that.”
