Man drinking can of beer drove away from gardaí

A 32-year-old man observed by gardaí sitting in the driver’s seat of a car drinking a can of beer drove off when they approached him,Sligo District Court heard. Shane Feeney, with an address at Mountshann­on, Bundoran Road, Sligo was arrested for drink driving on February 19 th 2017 at Pearse Road, Sligo. He was also charged with no insurance and driving when disqualifi­ed. Defending solicitor Mr Gerard McGovern said his client was seen by gardaí drinking beer behind the wheel and when he stopped at the garda station he was fully co-operative with gardaí. He said he had an alcohol problem and had been doing well before this unfortunat­e incident. He had been disqualifi­ed for four years for no insurance in 2014. Mr McGovern said the father of 2 young children was back on the straight and narrow now. Feeney told Judge Kevin Kilrane he is looking for work. He said he is barely drinking at all the odd time he watches football with his father whereas before he was waiting for the off licence to open in the morning, he said. Judge Kilrane adjourned for a Probation Report and said he might consider community service if all things are in order. He put the case back until September.
