“Through their perseveran­ce and commitment, this project was always in the public domain, and when funding was finally approved, it was a deserved tribute to the many people who had given so much to bring it to fruition.

“The desire for improved pontoon facilities date back to 2010, the new facility will contribute to the safer functionin­g of harbour life for the RNLI, fishermen, leisure users, commercial operators and harbour personnel.”

He added: “Sligo County Council works best when it works alongside the communitie­s we serve, and this was an example of exemplary team- work,involving the local community, Local Authority Members and staff, the Department officials and the project team – all firmly focused on delivering this facility for the people of Rosses Point.”

Following addresses by both Willie Murphy and Daryl Ewing, a blessing was performed by Fr Micheal Drumm and the ribbon was cut to officially open the new pontoon at the scenic spot.
