No CCTV system for Mud Lane

-

Sligo County Council says it will not provide funding for a CCTV system to be installed at Mud Lane in Cartron where illegal dumping has become an issue.

In her submission to the council, Fianna Fáil Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady said despite the “great work of the Tidy Towns Committee, lit tering remains a problem” in the area. “It would be ideal if funding was to be made available for CCTV in the area, ” she said.

People Before Profit Councillor Gino O’Boyle added that littering was indeed, “a problem all around the town.”

In his reply, Director of Ser vices Tom Kilfeather said the cost and maintenance of such a system “is quite high and often has lit tle or no comeback”. He warned that the placing of CCTV in residential areas may be viewed as an “invasion of the privacy of l ocal residents”.

Mr Kilfeather said funding had been granted to erect bollards close to the entrance to Mud Lane to prevent vehicle access in an effort to deter future illegal dumping.
