FLOOK
THE groundbreaking Manchester based band FLOOK will perform at the Hawk’s Well Theatre this summer during the Cairde festival on Friday 13th of July at 8pm. The flutes of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, the guitar of Ed Boyd and the bodhran of John Joe Kelly weave and spin traditionally rooted tunes into the breathtaking sound of the groundbreaking band Flook. This group possesses a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination.
Flook only properly burst onto the international music scene with the release of their debut studio album, “Flatfish”, in 1999. This album introduced master bodhran player John Joe Kelly to Flook’s line up of flutists Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen and guitarist Ed Boyd.
There is no shortage of virtuosity among the members of Flook, but the unique impact of this band stems from the wholly intuitive, almost symbiotic, exchange between the various flutes, frets and skins.
Flook announced that they were taking a prolonged pause from live performance at the end of 2008, but, due to overwhelming popular demand, they’re now back playing live and firing explosively on all four cylinders.
Tickets to see Flook in Sligo on Friday 13th of July at 8pm are €20/18 conc/10 u18 ( +€1 renovation fee).
SHASKEEN IN CONCERT
Enjoy a night of celebration of Irish traditional music and song with Shaskeen in concert at the Colemen Irish Music Centre in Gurteen, on Saturday June 23rd at 8.30pm.
The band will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2020, with several appearances during Galway European Capital of Culture year. Formed in 1970, original member Tom Cussen is a vital and energetic band leader. In forty eight years and long before Ryanair or online booking, Shaskeen was travelling and playing to packed houses all over Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe.
They have a unique and versatile approach to the music, always conscious of their audiences, respectful of the tradition but innovative in the ‘Shaskeen way.’
Like the difference in styles between the Kerry polkas, the Sligo or Donegal fiddler and the east Clare tradition, it would be fair to say that there will, in future generations, be commentary made on ‘ the Shaskeen style.’ This has stood to the band over the years and is evident in their vast repertoire.
