- By JESSICA FARRY

STRANDHILL basked in glorious sunshine over the weekend, with mother nature looking down on the Strandhill Show, which celebrated its 21st year on Saturday afternoon.

The show is a staple event on the summer calendar in Strandhill, and too often the organisers have had to contend with bad weather for the day of the event.

But not this year. With the heatwave kicking off on Saturday afternoon, organisers of the Strandhill Show knew that their luck was in.

The good weather undoubtedly enticed people to the event, while numbers participating in some events were up on previous years.

“We got an excellent day. The weather helped, it was a great day for it,” Johnny Kivlehan, a member of the organising committee, told The Sligo Champion.

“We were down in numbers in terms of adults in attendance but we were up in numbers regarding the numbers of children in attendance. It was an excellent day,” he added.

The weather was a welcome addition on the day.

“We couldn’t have asked for any more really, it all went really well. Now it was very warm, but there was days when it would be raining heavily and you’d have the water pouring out the side of the marquee.”

Numbers participating in the dog show increased this year compared to last year, while numbers of those taking part in the home industries section were also up on previous years.

In the arts and crafts section: “We couldn’t take all that had wanted to take part in it. It was a very successful day,” he added.
