Author donates book proceeds to NW Simon

-

The North West Simon Community has benefited greatly from sales of the recently published ‘Beezie’s People’.

The book, written by Julia Hession, was launched in May.

The book channels the childhood of Julia Hession, who grew up in the community of ‘Lougill’.

The book is described as follows: “Deep in the heart of Western Ireland sits a community in a townland called Loughill. Surrounded by fields, mountains and bogs, this small community had to knit together in times of hardship, facing together as one, any misfortune, but also rejoicing in each others’ success. Now one of the oldest residents has shared her memories of the townland, its characters, their pranks, traditions and their mishaps, and how one girl grew up surrounded by a community that helped each other, cared deeply about one another, and pulled a living out of the wild lands around them.

“Join her as she looks back at traditional Irish life, and looks ahead to what the new modern age can bring.”

Julia, from Woodland Equestrian Centre, Cloonacool said: “When I wrote ‘Beezies People’ it wasn’t my intention for publication. It was just a record of what life was like in the distant and not so distant past, so that perhaps in years to come some of today’s children in the area could learn some local social history because for sure some will say “I wish I asked more questions”.

As a result of injury in 2015 Julie had time on her hands and decided to write Beezies People, a read about her generation and the generation before her.

Julia thanks Karen McKim who typed the book and her husband Tony who took on the project of having the book published.

Eventually it arrived so Julia and Tony decided to donate all proceeds from the book sales to North West Simon Community Sligo, this was Julia’s chosen charity as Julia says “they do great work finding suitable accommodation for individuals and families who find themselves in difficulty”.

Julia and Tony wish to thank everyone who supported the book launch and bought the book. As a result of everyone’s generosity €2,000 has been donated to the local homeless charity.

The book has now been reprinted and will be available in the coming weeks in Tubbercurry from Julia & Tony Hession (087 6177600) and at the North West Simon Community Charity Shop at 4 JFK Parade, Sligo.
