Community urged to increase usage of Easkey Post Office

- By JESSICA FARRY

A group that was set up to save Easkey Post Office has urged members of the community to continue using their local post office, and to maybe even do one more thing there.

The ‘Save Easkey Post Office’ campaign group was set up back in February when members of the local community were informed that the service was being threatened with closure when the then postmaster announced his retirement.

There was good news in March when An Post announced that a postmaster had been appointed to the Post Office for 12 months, with a review to take place at the end of the period.

And now, the campaign group want to remind people that the Post Office is not out of the woods just yet, and it is vital that usage continues.

“We’re going around houses and meeting the local community to try and encourage people to utilise the post office as best they can,” Richard Morrissey, PRO of the Save Easkey Post Office campaign told The Sligo Champion.

“We want to encourage people to do more than the normal stuff at the post office. We want young people as well to start using the service. When we were younger we all had savings accounts with the post office so that kind of thing could be utilised more,” he added.

The group want people to pay more bills in the post office, or make use of An Post’s Parcel Drop service.

“I’ve started paying bills through the post office. There are also lots of savings schemes there. So there is much more to the post office than just posting letters, and we need to make sure people are aware of that.”

There has been an increase in the use of post office services since the campaign began.

Leaflets have been distributed to every home in the community, and there will be further public meetings.

“The campaign has been good. We have to co-ordinate in the village and we will be inviting people to come again to a further meeting.

“We were chasin An Post for leaflets and that so we have been in touch with them. They’re interested to see what we can do with the post office and the potential it has,” Richard continued.
