Corey says goals achieved from start of the year

-

SLIGO manager Cathal Corey said after Saturday’s defeat to Armagh that he felt his side played well at times particularly in the first half.

“We played well I thought in the first half I thought we battled well and we got some great scores and maybe could have been a few more up at half time.

“We were going well and we conceded 3 points just before half time and then a goal just after the restart and that left 6 or 7 scores in it and they were always strong in defensive and well organised and it was just hard for us to get in for scores we would have needed to turn the game,” the Tyrone man said.

The manager explained that conceding just before half time is something the team will have to work on as they conceded before half time in Galway too.

Cathal said he had no sour grapes regarding the clash of fixtures which saw both the hurling final and Qualifiers on the same day with dual player Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch featuring in both.

“The hurlers did brilliantly, they are up on the steps in Croke Park with the cup and that was a great day for them.

“Gerard came down after the hurling and he had a role to play and he did what we asked of him.

“I have no sour grapes over it,” the Tyrone man said.

Cathal said that regarding the discipline during the end of the match was something to be expected in terms of Championship football.

“Things like that can happen over the course of the game it doesn’t annoy me.”

With Sligo now out of the All-Ireland, Cathal said looking back on his first year as Sligo manager there were positives to take.

“We had a tough National league but we did brilliant to survive it.

“There was a lot of strong teams in it this year.

“We said at the start of the year our goal was to stay in Division 3 and beat London and everything after that we would have felt would have been a bonus.

“Over the last 2 years there has been a lot of young players that have come in to play for Sligo seniors so it is just going to take a wee while to transition and that.

“But overall looking back we were happy with the National league and disappointed with our run in the Championship,” he added.

He said regarding his future, he will sit down and talk with his backroom team. “I will sit down and talk with my backroom team and meet with the County Board and we will review the past season. “It will be whatever is best for Sligo.

“If there is a role for me to play in the future of this team then I am happy to do that.

“If they see there is a different road they want to go down, I have no problem, I will not be standing in anybody’s road if they feel there is a different way they want to go.

“I enjoyed it, the lads are brilliant lads and we have made real good friendships there and I hope they get what is best for them and if I’m involved in that I am and if it’s not we will see over the next few weeks,” Cathal added.
