The Sligo Champion

O’Kelly-Lynch raced home for Qualifiers game

-

THERE wasn’t much time for Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch to soak up the jubilant scenes after Sligo won the Lory Meagher cup in Croke Park on Saturday as he rushed back to Markievicz Park for the football Qualifiers with Armagh later that evening.

The St Mary’s man said it was a day of mixed emotions after the football defeat but the hurlers win was incredible.

“Winning earlier was great third time in Croke Park after 4 years, third time lucky but we got there in the end.

“We didn’t look too good with a few minutes to go but we got the goal in the end and thankfully we got to see it out.”

The dual player said it was a huge privilege to get to play in Croke Park.

“It is great to have those days out in Croke Park.

“That is my third time to play there, two final losses in ‘15 and ‘16 so it’s brilliant to win this year.

“There are lads that put in great work this year training has been top notch,” he added.

In terms of the football match in Markievicz Park he joked that he made it down but it was a bit of a rush in the end.

“I made it down on time, well just about!

“It was a bit of a rush once the cup was lifted and it wasn’t long before I was on the road down.”

He said that there was never a doubt that he wasn’t going to make himself available for both games despite being on the same day in different parts of the country.

“I was always going to make myself available for both games anyway.

“The timing now didn’t make it easy but I suppose I made both games.

“The clash was slightly unfortunate, two county teams both out on the same day, but I made both games thankfully,” Gerard added.
