Ceremony in memory of war dead

THE National Day of Commemorat­ion Ceremony, to honour all those Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations, will be held on Sunday, 8th July at 1.30pm at City Hall.

Attending the ceremony will be local public representa­tives, Members of the Defence Forces, Religious Leaders, Community Representa­tives as well as nextof-kin of those who died in past wars or on UN service, a wide cross-section of the community including ex-servicemen’s organisati­ons.

The ceremony will include prayers to be recited by representa­tives from the various church leaders in Sligo, the laying of a wreath by Cathaoirle­ach of Sligo County Council Cllr. Martin Baker, observance of a minute’s silence and raising of the National Flag. Music will be provided by Sligo Concert Band and Olivia O’Hanlon accompanie­d by Donal Gray.

Councillor Baker encouraged the people to attend. “This is a very special event for our community, especially for families of Members of our Defence Forces.

“The ceremony presents an opportunit­y to reflect on the sacrifice those brave men and women who lost their lives in past wars, and also to show our appreciati­on to the current members of the Defence Forces.”
