Sligo items to be auctioned in Kilkenny

A wardrobe that once belonged to Lord Mountbatte­n is among the items for sale at a ‘Big House’ auction in Kilkenny next week.

Fonsie Mealy Auctioneer­s will conduct a two day auction comprising 900 lots on 10 th & 11 th July, 2018 at The Chatsworth Auction Rooms, Chatsworth St., Castlecome­r, Co. Kilkenny.

This highly important sale will include items formerly housed at Morristown Lattin, Naas Co. Kildare, Albert House, Co. Sligo, an Irish American (Boston) Collection, Spire Hall (home of the Odlums Family), and select contents from other Fine Estates & Collection­s (Family Portraits, paintings, furniture and objets d’art. The aesthetic period stained oak two door wardrobe was once owned by Mountbatte­n, and resided in Classiebaw­n Castle until the 1960s.

When Classiebaw­n Castle underwent a rejuvenati­on, the wardrobe was sold to the Martin family, of Albery House.

The wardrobe will be on auction for €180-€220 while ‘an exceptiona­lly fine and rare mid-nineteenth century nickel cased eight day chronomete­r timepiece’ (pictured) is expected to be sold for between €10,000 and €15,000 having been in the ownership of a family for 80 years.

A late victorian speckled black marble fireplace from Albert House is also to be auctioned for a price between €700 and €1000.

A Georgian period mahogany side table, a fine quality heavy pile rust ground Donegal carpet, a 19 th century English walnut cabinet and a whole host of other items from Albert House, Pearse Road are to be auctioned off.

Speaking about the auction, George Fonsie Mealy, Director of Fonsie Mealy Auctioneer­s said, “We bring to the market an eclectic and diverse collection of important items giving a tangible insight into the upstairs downstairs of yesteryear in the Big Country House”.
