Man tells judge he should have taken drugs at stag party

-

A man told a District Court judge he should have eaten ecstasy pills found in his room during a stag party because if he had, he wouldn’t be up in court.

Rory Boyd (36) of Woodstream, Coolaney, pleaded guilty to possessing ¤20 worth of ecstasy at a stag party in Carrick-on-Shannon on 30 th July 2017.

Boyd had already previously pleaded guilty to possessing 2gms of cocaine worth ¤140 at Temple Street, Sligo on 29 th March 2015 and to a Public Order incident on Main Street, Collooney on 2nd May 2016 and was being monitored by the Probation Service.

A Probation Report said Boyd had come to negative attention twice since 2016; in Carrick-on-Shannon last July and an alleged Public Order incident in Johnston Court, Sligo, on 24 th October 2017.

The Probation Officer noted a “decline in en- gagement” on Boyd’s part. When Judge Kilrane pointed the Probation Officer’s comments that his approach was “going downhill”, Boyd replied “I don’t know.” He said he only missed two days community service because of a bad back.

He said that the Gardaí came into his room at 12.30am when he was on a stag party in Carrick-on-Shannon and found the drugs on a table.

“I didn’t take it. I should have taken it and I wouldn’t be up in court,” he said.

“You don’t think you’ve done anything wrong. The overall package is a bad one,” said the judge to Boyd, who agreed with him.

Judge Kilrane told defence solicitor Mr Eddie Henry that he was concerned about Boyd’s attitude.

“This man is very near the steps of Castlerea Prison at this moment in time” said the judge but he reluctantly agreed to adjourn the case to 27 th September next.
