The Sligo Champion

Memorable Féile weekend for three Sligo clubs

-

Féile fever swept the country at the weekend and for three local clubs it was a fantastic competition with all three doing extremely well and making Sligo proud.

Owenmore Gaels, Curry and St Mary’s all took part. Owenmore Gaels’ U14 Boys were crowned Féile Division 8 Shield Champions last Sunday in Louth after beating Cordal/Scartaglin 1-03 to 0-2 in the final.

To reach the Shield final, the boys finished third in their group beating Roach Emmetts of Dundalk while losing by the narrowest of margins to both Cooraclare and Cooley Kickhams.

From there they beat Oliver Plunketts of Louth in the Quarter-Final 5-6 to 2-7 and St. Marys GFC of Louth 2-9 to 2-4 in the Semi-Final.

The team and managers arrived back to the clubhouse on Sunday evening with huge support present to kick off the celebrations.

The club said: “A massive thank you to all players, team managers Gary Mullen and Garrett Lavin, all the parents and supporters who came in great numbers to cheer on the boys and the Cooley Kickhams host families who put up all the players and were extremely helpful throughout the whole weekend.

“Well done lads you have done your club and county proud on this massive achievement.”

Curry defeated Blarney to reach the Féile final in Clonduff, Co Down. They faced Granard in the final and lost by just one point.

The club said: “Commiserations to our Féile team who lost by just a point in the Féile final against Granard in Clonduff.

“The lads did us proud to the very end. Rub of the Green went Granard’s way today but what a weekend we had.

“We would like to thank St. John’s GAA Dromnacoille for hosting us, their hospitality was second to none. Thank you also to all our own parents and club members for their help & support over the weekend.”

St Mary’s teams also did well with the girls team making it to the semi finals while the U14 boys reached the quarter finals.

The club said: “Back home for the U14 boys & girls after a great weekend at Féile Peile 2018. “Unfortunately not our day with the boys losing out in the quarter finals & the girls narrowly losing out in the semi finals.

“A big thank you to both the hosting clubs Navan O’Mahonys GAA & Shercock Ladies GFC.”

A great weekend for all the players and coaches to remember.
