NAOMH EOIN

CONGRATULATIONS to our players on the double All Ireland winning Sligo hurling teams over the past week and a half. We had six players on the Lory Meagher Cup winning team panel in Croke Park with Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch, Niall Feehily, Tony O’Kelly-Lynch, Matt Davey, Tom O’Callaghan and Cathal Jordan all involved. Great to see the cup being brought back to Sligo and so many of our players playing their part.

WE also had a major involvement with the victorious Sligo U-17 (Minor) hurling Celtic Challenge Cup team with eight players on the panel of 22. They beat Mayo in the semi-final last Monday and then Donegal on Saturday evening in Tullamore in the All Ireland final. Darragh Cawley, Liam O’Kelly-Lynch, Paul Gallagher, Michael Munnelly, Fergal O’Kelly-Lynch, Ethan Scully, Donal Keaveny, and Anthony Fidgeon all played in both games and throughout the group stages. Both Liam and Fergal O’Kelly-Lynch scored early goals as the Sligo lads lead from the off, winning 3-12 to 2-8. Many thanks to former Sligo GPO Benny Kenny and his backroom team for his work with this squad. OUR senior hurlers made a great start to the Sligo senior hurling championship with a convincing 2-23 to 0-10 win at home to Tourlestrane in Round 1 of the group stage. Great team performance in the second half following a tight first period after which we lead by a point (0-8 to 0-7). The lads built up a good lead from the restart and with goals from Tony O’Kelly-Lynch and Donal Fidgeon, we never looked like losing our grip on the contest. It took a fine save by netminder Michael Healy and some sturdy defending in a well-contested first 30 minutes to keep us in the game. Special mention to our championship debutants Niall Campbell, Roan Conneely, Tom Armstrong and Conor Darcy.

NEXT up is a Round 3 tie (we have a bye in Round 2) away to Easkey on the weekend of 21st/22nd July. SENIOR team v Tourlestrane and scorers: Michael Healy; Niall Campbell, David Hickey, Evan Davey; Thomas O’Callaghan, Niall Feehily, Matt Davey (0-2); Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch (0-5), Tony O’Kelly-Lynch (1-5); Roan Conneely (0-2), Paul Kilcoyne (0-5), Donal Fidgeon (1-2); Colm Dolan, Kevan Brennan (0-2), Niall Rooney. SUBS used: Tom Armstrong and Conor Darcy.

WELL done to Robert O’Kelly-Lynch who represented Sligo in the National Skills Feile and also as part of the St. Mary’s GAA team in the football Feile last weekend. Well done also to Treasa O’Kelly-Lynch who was part of the St Mary’s girls Feile team who reached the final on Sunday. Busy and successful few weeks for all six of the O’Kelly-Lynch family! OUR U-12 hurlers play Coolera/ Strandhill in Round 6 of the league in Kent Park at 7pm on Wednesday evening.

SINCERE condolences to John Doyle on the passing of his father James (Jim) which was commemorated at the Meagher Cup final in Croke Park last Saturday week.

TOURLESTRANE

OUR senior men took to the field at home in a league game v Coolaney /Mullinabreena on a somewhat cooler afternoon than we have had for a week or more but it proved to be a hot exciting game of football between the two teams which served up great entertainment for all the spectators from both parishes. After swapping leads a number of times in the opening part of the game our lads were ahead at the break by 2/6 to 5 points.

IN the second half we were slow to score and the visitors scored well taken points coming back into the game but eventually we came out the winner by 2/11 to 11 points . HARD luck to the senior Hurlers who were beaten on Saturday night .

WELL done to our u16 boys who had a great win v St John’s and a huge win for our u14 Hurlers who were crowned league champions on Monday last !

CÚL camps kick off this week in Tourlestrane and you can still book your place in the morning. Please remember to hydrate all children well in the very hot weather promised again for the week and again a reminder to all to Bring your Water with you as the boil notice is still in place. Enjoy the week !!

WELL done to CT Gaels feile team who gave a great account of themselves in The National Feile going down by two points in the cup semifinal after winning their three group games and quarterfinal. WELL done to Mark Burke and the Sligo hurlers on capturing the Lory Meagher cup with a victory over Lancashire in Croke Park.

ST. FARNAN’S

WHAT a week for Sligo’s hurlers and for our county players. Following James Weir’s win in the Lory Meagher final he was also named on the Hurling team of the week in corner back. Our under 17 hurlers, Cahan Hallinan, Fionn Connolly, Thomas Cawley and Shane Molloy were part of Sligo’s under 17 team which captured the Michael Feery Cup in the Celtic Challenge final against Donegal on Saturday in Tullamore. We congratulate the players and their team mates of Easkey/ St. Farnan’s on this great win.

THE intermediate team had to satisfied with a draw against St. John’s on Sunday in the league. The score was 1-12 each. St. Farnan’s had chances to win but a few errors and a saved penalty shot proved costly. St. John’s dominated the first half and led by 9points to 5 at the break with David Rooney scoring eight of those. St. Farnan’s improved their performance in the second half and when Niall Crean got a goal in the eighteenth minute the sides were level 1-8 to 0-11. St. Farnan’s led by three with two points from Ciaran O’Connor and one from Iarla O’Connor. St. John’s capitalised on a short kick out and found the net. Finnian Cawley got the last point of the game to equalise. The junior team play Owenmore Gaels on Sunday at 1pm in Templeboy.

LADIES - Well done to Claire Dunne on making her competitive Intermediate inter county debut when donning the “Black and White” against Roscommon in the Connacht Final in McHale Park on Sunday week last. For somebody so young and only in the panel a matter of weeks she acquitted herself very well and visibly grew in confidence as the game progressed. She has been one of the leading players in the county at underage level in recent years and it is great to see her now bringing that form into adult football. She was one of two St. Farnan’s players in the squad on the day, Leah Kelly having just recently re-joined the group after taking time out to concentrate on her Leaving Certificate studies. Unfortunately, victory on the day went to the Rossies thus depriving the Yeats county of a three-in-a row of provincial titles in the grade, but the new look Sligo side will have learned a lot from the experience which no doubt will stand them in good stead in years to come.

The U-14’s continue on their winning ways and have qualified for the final of the Group 3 League. The side finished the Group stage of the competition in a three way tie for second place along with Curry and Geevagh thus necessitating playoffs to decide which team would advance to the decider. The side was drawn to face the former in the first playoff, a game which they won comfortably on a scoreline of 7-10 to 5-4, thereby advancing to face Geevagh. This game was a much tighter affair between two evenly matched sides but our girls persevered and emerged victorious by four points to claim that spot in the final in which they will play St. Nathy’s. Details of this fixture will be available locally. Good Luck to all involved.

Our Gaelic for Mothers and Others group was one of twenty six teams which participated in the Connacht Blitz recently. The team played three games with The Neale, Tuam/Cortoom and Kilglass Gaels providing the opposition, and victory was achieved in all three games and the whole event proved to be most enjoyable. The players who travelled on the day were: L. Harte/Gilroy, G.Watters, A.Toolan, I.McNulty, S.Dunne, J.McAndrew, A.Griffin, S.Tempany, J.Scott, K.Henry, P.Hargadon. The team also travelled to Crossmolina to play the local side and wre treated to refreshments after the game by their hosts. Training continues every Monday and Thursday and new members are always welcome.

Well done to the following players on winning the U-12 “A” League plate recently: S. O’Connell, R. McAndrew, M. O’Connell, E.Scott, S.Gillespie, R. Cormack, A. O’Connell, J. Murray, C. Burns, A. Broderick, A. Donlon, A. Rowlette, M. Walsh, L. O’Brien, S.Burns, M. Scott, K. Walsh, E. Tempany, L. Kilrehill.

Congratulations and best wishes for the future to club player Deborah Kelly and Daniel O’Hara who were married in Templeboy Church on Saturday last.
