The Sligo Champion

Memorial match being held for Ross McCarrick

-

FRIENDS and family of the late Ross McCarrick are coming together to organise a Memorial Cup in the teenager’s honour.

The 15-year-old passed away after a short illness in June and the region is mourning the loss of the popular student.

Sports fan Ross, from Carton Estate, was much loved and liked in his local community and in Summerhill College where he was a student.

Ross’s large group of friends are organising a Memorial Cup match which will be taking place in the Showgrounds on Saturday, July 7th.

Ross was an avid Sligo Rovers supporter and was a regular at the grounds. Friends paid tribute to the young student with a special banner at the Cork City game and also at last Saturday’s Sligo Rovers game with Waterford.

James Lawlor, a friend of Ross is helping to organise the Memorial Cup and he said they wanted to do something to remember the popular teenager.

He said: “All the proceeds from the Memorial Cup will be going to Our Lady of Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

“Ross was huge into sport, he loved Sligo Rovers and Liverpool.

“He was known all over the town and comes from a lovely family. He had so many friends.

“He loved playing football. The Forza lads got a new big display for the Waterford game with the words Always with us Ross and his picture.

“He was loving life and everyone is just heartbroken,” James added. The whole town has been great to the family.”

He said that there are 8 teams taking part in the Memorial Cup and there is a Facebook page set up and also an online event.

“We will have a donations link up soon and on the day one of the Hardy Bucks actors will be MC on the day.

“It is going to be a big day and having it in the Showgrounds is what he would have wanted and all his close friends playing football.

“All the proceeds are going to Crumlin and we are looking for volunteers to help out too if they can.

“They can get in touch through the Facebook page and if sponsors want to get in contact too.

“We are hoping to get everybody out.

“It is something we wanted to do to remember Ross and hopefully it will be an annual event.

“It gives us something to do at this difficult time,” James added.

They have set up a Facebook page, Ross McCarrick Memorial Cup if you would like to help out.
