Hazardous waste day was ‘too successful’

A hazardous waste disposal day proved to be too popular with long queues tr ying to access the facilit y l ast Saturday at Deep Water Quay in Sligo.

Many people didn’t get to use it but Monday’s meeting of Sligo Municipal Authorit y was told a second day was being planned shor tly.

The free drop- of f event took place bet ween 9am and 12.30pm but traf f ic son became blocked in the area.

Cllr Thomas Healy said it showed that there was a need for a hazardous waste facilit y site in the town. Some people had queued from 8.30am he said.

Clr Declan Bree said it had been a bit of a f iasco but no one expected so many people to turn up and it was great to see the public so aware of the issue and they were to be thanked for their ef for t s.

Director of Ser vices, Tom Kilfeather said the Department of the Environmen­t of Housing, Planning and Local Government had undert aken to fund a second collection day within the next si x weeks.

Mr Kilfeather said another location was being looked at and possibly a permanent one.

Chief Executive Ciaran Hayes said the problem experience­d l ast Saturday was one of success.
