‘Numbers will make Greenway happen’ - Co-op

ON the eve of the publication by Government of the new Strategy for the Future Development of Greenways, Sligo Greenway Co-op are urging more and more people to get behind the campaign for a Greenway for Co Sligo suggesting; “numbers will make it happen.”

The community group promoting the greenway proposal say in a recent statement: “Public opinion is beginning to swing more and more in favour of Sligo getting its own greenway but it will take more work.

“The new strategy provides clear guidelines; we now need to make sure we fit these requirements.” Sligo County Council will be the major player working in association with Irish Rail (licence/ permission) and National Government (funding).

The group, who see the new Greenway serving Sligo, town and county, are urging as many local people as possible to now join the campaign.

In that regard the Greenway Co-op have just launched a new membership appeal.

Membership or shareholding in the Co-op is now available throughout the county in retail outlets and also online.

“This membership shows that the communities of County Sligo want this project to happen.

“It is the best support people can give at this time; helping the to build numbers to ensure what the community wants, the community gets”.

The railway, disused since 1974, running from Collooney to Bellaghy (Charlestown), is the main piece of infrastructure being earmarked for the greenway.

The proposed greenway will however have links to Sligo City.

Membership or shares in the Greenway Co-op are now available in Collooney (Centra), Coolaney (O’Grady’s and Mountain Inn), Tubbercurry (Computerbits and Coffee Dock), Curry ( Yeats County Inn) and Charlestown (Market Café).
