Drunk driving after football success

A young man went celebratin­g after a football club win but he ended up being arrested for drunk driving.

Before Sligo District Court was Cian McDermott (20) of Riverstown who was charged with drunk driving on August 20 th 2017 at Pearse Road and with not having insurance.

Defending solicitor, Ms Ita Lyster told the court that the defendant’s team in Rivestown had won a match and everyone was “on a bit of a high.”

The defendant was also starting a holiday.

“He foolishly drove into town and then foolishly attempted to drive home but was stopped on his way,” said Ms Lyster.

She added that the defendant was very involved in his local community.

Inspector Sweeney said a sample from the defendant showed a reading of 181 mgs of alcohol per 100mls of blood.

On the drunk driving charge, the defendant was fined €200 and banned for three years.

For not having insurance, the defendant was fined €200 along with a two year ban.
