The Sligo Champion

Devins adds another title to his season

-

MATTHEW Devins riding for Yeats Country Cycling Club Sligo lined up for the Moynalty Grand Prix on recently, having been the previous winner of the race 12 months earlier.

The race consisted of 5 laps of an 8km circuit totalling 40kms. The circuit was a rolling one, with a few hills and a fast tailwind section with an uphill finish at the end of each lap.

There were attacks from the start with the large field strung out from the gun.

At the end of the first lap there was a crash just before the last kilometre which caused the group to split.

All the riders that crashed continued in the race.

On the 2nd lap Matthew attacked the group but was a marked man and was not given any leeway by the other riders.

Matthew continued to attack the group on each lap, but kept getting brought back by his main rival Ryan Geraghty from Bike worx club in Dublin.

As the laps ticked down it was looking more and more like a sprint finish with only about 15 riders left in the depleted peloton.

Keith Mulroy from the Westport club Covey wheeler’s opened up the sprint early on in the uphill sprint to the line.

This caused Matthew to get boxed in on the left hand side of the road with Ryan Geraghty tight on Matthew’s wheel.

With 150 metres to go the riders in front of Matthew started to tire enabling Matthew to get out and sprint in for another fantastic win followed closely by Ryan Geraghty with Fintan Caulfield Greenmount Academy In 3rd spot.

Matthew has been having a fantastic season of racing.
