Greenway group are ‘on the right track’ as new strategy launched
THE Sligo Greenway Co-op group received a boost last week as they attended the launch of the ‘Strategy for the future development of National and Regional Greenways’ by Minister Shane Ross in Moate.
The Government has allocated ¤53 million for greenways over three years.
Chairperson of the Sligo Greenway Co-op Pat McCarrick attended the launch on behalf of the group and felt the strategy is in line with what his group has been proposing for a potential greenway from Bellaghy to Collooney.
The strategy reported that this would be an excellent opportunity to develop new green- ways in a way that can transform more rural areas and contribute to health of the nation. The strategy said that greenways could add value to rural communities that have suffered since the downturn and that greenways would have tourism benefits and health benefits.
“These aspects were key in the submission we made. So we’re on the right track,” said Pat McCarrick.
“The deadline for funding applications for the new scheme is November so we need to work together with Sligo County Council to do everything in our power to make sure that this deadline is met,” he said.
