Albert House clock is top seller at ‘Big Country House’ auction

A rare 19 th century clock that resided in Albert House, Pearse Road, Sligo, was the top seller at ‘ The Big House’ auction, held by Fonsie Mealy Auctioneer­s in Kilkenny.

Initially priced at €10,000-€15,000, the clock sold for €25,000.

The clock was described as “an exceptiona­lly fine and rare mid-nineteenth century nickel cased eight-day chronomete­r timepiece.”

“The 17cms high nickel case, with hexagonal folding handle over a bevelled glass top and three bevelled glass panels, and a plain front panel. The back panel with two shuttered apertures for winding and hands change, the circular enamel dial with Roman numerals and with recessed subsidiary dial, the main dial and movement signed and numbered, and in original leather carrying case.”

The clock was owned by the Martin family for over 80 years. Other items sold from Albert House included a Georgian period mahogany side table and 19 th Century English walnut cabinet.
