Cannabis plants were to last man (58) a year

-

WHEN Gardaí raided a man’s home they found 15 ‘ baby’ cannabis plants growing worth in the region of €7,200, Judge Kevin Kilrane was told at Sligo District Court.

Before the court was Michael Caffrey of Gleann, Sooey who admitted a charge of cultivation of cannabis plants on June 8th 2017.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne told the court that Sergeant Therese Duignan and other Gardaí searched the defendant’s house and seized the plants.

He added that it would appear the plants were being grown for the defendant’s own use.

Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor (defending) pleaded that the defendant lived on his own and did not have any previous convictions.

He had two ongoing illnesses and he smoke the drug at home. It was all cannabis herb, said Mr McGovern.

“He told the Gardaí that he was growing enough in order to last him for the year,” said Mr McGovern, adding that the defendant wasn’t working.

Judge KIlrane said there was no suggestion the cannabis was being grown for sale or supply and fined the defendant €300.

The Judge added: “The only view I can take is that this activity is proscribed in this State.”
