Cemetery Friary is a big safety concern
THERE have been renewed calls to secure a monument at Court Abbey Cemetery in Lavagh.
The Monument which is an old Franciscan Friary is a safety concern to the community and to families of loved ones buried in the vicinity.
Local councillor Margaret Gormley said: “On the 21st August 2017 the Minister responsible for the office of the OPW Minister Kevin Boxer Moran visited the site and witnessed for himself the dangerous state it’s in and the need to have works carried out to it.
“It was pointed out to him that the local authority were not in a position to carry out such an assessment due to lack of funding. He did request that it be established who the owners are and once he had that information that his department would provide the funding to carry out a study as to what needs to be done to make it safe.
“This information was conveyed to him, but nearly twelve months on we are still awaiting Minister Boxer Moran to honour his commitment he made. In April I tabled a motion calling on the Minister to honour his commitment and make the funding available. I am making that call once again.”
