The Sligo Champion

Take a bow Coolaney!

- Madam Editor, Kind Regards, Geraldine Tubbercurry Co. Sligo.

After taking part and completing the Sligo Camino on Saturday 7th July I feel that I have to put pen to paper and say a very big Thank You and Well Done to the committee and volunteers. There must not have been a single person left in their homes on Saturday around Coolaney as there were so many volunteers all along the 36km of tracks and roads (pictured right) ensuring that no one took the wrong route and also where necessary helping with traffic control, and there were plenty of volunteers helping at the various official stops giving out water, coffee, tea, fruit and bars and of course helping with the car parking at the start and the fabulous hot food and beverages at the end. The bins were emptied constantly around the various stops and I’m sure there was not a trace of the 1,000 plus people who walking from Dromahair to Coolaney the next day.

It was I would imagine a mammoth task to organise and to run so well on the day. Registration was well organised with no delay - we were given our maps and t-shirts.

Once registered there were a few buses waiting outside and we could hop on and go.

The whole route was well marked with the Sligo Way markers and also lots of huge Sligo Camino signs.

Thankfully the weather was perfect for such a long walk, dry but no too hot!

Everyone was so friendly along the way and the volunteers were telling us we were nearly there. Even the children sitting on the wall outside Coolaney were encouraging us to keep going as we were nearly there!

We arrived back to the centre in Coolaney and had a feast of lovely tasty hot food, tea, coffee, cakes etc.

I would like to say take a bow Coolaney Village - what a wonderful community spirit you have there,
