GOLF OUTING

The South Sligo Golf outing to Enniscrone takes place Monday, August 13. Formerly known as the Gillespie Cup, it now has a new format but the old people are still involved as it is now called ‘The Masters’. John Gillespie is taking names and times for the time sheet and it is filling up fast. Call in to him at Teeling Street or ring him 087 2885980. Old and New or young golfers from all over South Sligo or with a connection to South Sligo are invited to attend. A wonderful occasion is always guaranteed where many friends are re-acquainted.

TIDY TOWNS

Great work has gone on over the last few months by the Tidy Town committee and workers. While every part of town is close to litter-free, it is a pity that fast food outlets do not do more to ensure wrappings from their premises are not left discarded outside their premises at closing time. The result is that early morning visitors and workers to town are faced with this litter. Landscaping and flower beds are especially attractive at the traffic lights on the Circular Road/ Ballina Road junction and on the Circular Road. Keep up the good work. All property owners can help present the town better by painting the occasional wall, door or gate.

NEW WALL MURALS

The gateway leading from the old Market Yard, now the SuperValu car park to Teeling Street, got a facelift recently, thanks to the Spanish Language School which attends in Tubbercurry each year. Local artist Damian Moran oversaw the mural project and he was ably assisted by the 20 Spanish Students, who spent the month of July with host families in and around Tubbercurry. This is a welcome addition to the street art that has decorated various large blank walls in recent years. Well done to all concerned.

SUMMER SCHOOL

The South Sligo summer School has just finished last weekend and it was another outstanding success, with student numbers on a par with previous years. Top quality music sessions were held at concert venues and in pubs each evening and into the dark night. On a number of occasions street sessions were also held, and these added to the festival atmosphere. Well done again to the hard working committee and their team of volunteers for another successful event.
