Su mmer fest to host Mu ndy

MUNDY, often referred to as ‘ the Buddha of Birr’ is back in town next week for the Sligo Summer Festival.

The singer/songwriter will appear alongside old busking pal Paddy Casey on Saturday 11 August in the Stephen Street car park for what promises to be a rollicking good gig.

“We used to be fellow buskers. Last year we did a bunch of gigs around the country so we’re really looking forward to coming back to Sligo,” Mundy who spoke to The Sligo Champion during a break in rehearsals with his trumpet player and saxophonis­t.

“I’m bringing my six-piece band and we’ ll be playing an array of hits from my 21 years in the music business. We’re definitely trying to keep things upbeat,” he said.

The Offaly father-of-two hasn’t released an album in three years but is in “no rush” to put one out for the sake of it. “I’m in a good place.

Things have changed since I first came on the scene – my first album was on cassette. I just want to gather really good songs to make a great album,” he said.

In the 21st century music industry, what’s the key to success?

“Just really good songs that people want to listen to,” he told this newspaper.

Mundy was among several musicians who paid tribute to the late Dolores Riordan on her sudden death earlier this year.

The pair would have met several times over the years. Since her death, Mundy has played “a few gigs where we paid tribute to her.”

“It was such a terrible loss. I think the wholehl country felt it and for something that perhaps could have been avoided. These things are very sad,” he said.

Mundy plays in Stephen St Car Park with Paddy Casey on Saturday 11 August.

The ffestivalt­il kikicksk offff on ThThursday night 9 th August with music of the 80’s performed by local musician Kieran Quinn and guests.

This coincides with Sligo Races’ August meeting so there will be plenty of buzz about town for those two events.

Example and DJ Wire play on Friday night, with Mundy and Paddy Casey due to take Sligo by storm on the Saturday night.

Mike Denver and friends will play on the Sunday night.

There will be a €3 admission for over 12’s on the gate to help fund the event.

There’s expected to be food vendors selling gourmet burgers, vegetarian curries and more from mobile food stalls around Stephen Street car park also.
