Sligo cricketers shine in consecutive wins
IT has been a very jubilant week for county Sligo Cricket Club players as they beat Ballyhaunis Cricket club in the Connacht League game and also beat County Cavan Cricket club to qualify for the Connacht Cup Final 2018.
This winning campaign started with an emphatic win over Cavan Cricket Club.
Having won the toss and elected to field first proved a miserable decision by the Cavan Captain. Though Sligo lost two early wickets in a quick succession, an excellent knock of Fawad Khan (116) with the contribution of Rawal Waseem (32), Rashid Waseem (35) Muhammad Asif (19) and quick smashes of Luqman Bashir (16), Rizwan Sikander (13) in the last overs posted a gigantic total of 277/8 in 40 overs. The most prosaic century of the day belonged to Fawad Khan who scored his maiden century and second in the club’s history since 2009.
Cavan started quick and placed themselves in pretty sound position in the first few overs.
Cavan’s Hassan Mehmood pressed the panic button for Sligo bowlers and ruthlessly hit them to get his 50 runs in no time but an excellent pacey yorker by Ghulam Nabi showed him the way to pavilion.
Cavan’s middle order resisted a little bit but not enough to take control of the game as Sligo bowlers kept their line and length dead right and took all 10 wickets for just 174 runs 32.5 overs.
The second game vs Ballyhaunis was almost the same sight as Sligo won the toss and elected to bat first.
After losing an early first wicket, two magnificent knocks by Joubert Pienaar (93) and Rawal Waseem (46) set the platform to put a big score on the board. Centurion from the last game continued where he left and made quick 61 runs with seven huge sixes. Rashid Waseem (22 and Dr Ahmad Iqbal (26) took Sligo score to another huge total.
Sligo ended up with 288/6 in limited 40 overs. In response, Ballyhaunis stumbled from the very first over when Luqman Bashir (30/2 in 5.3 overs, Yasir Raja (35/3 in 5.3 overs) took 4 wickets in first 5 overs and left the whole team in shambles. Ballyhaunis late middle order tried to fight but shore was far away and the waves were very high.
The whole team bowled out on 196 in 31.3 over. Rawal Waseem took managed to take 3 wickets with the input of Qaiser Mahmood 24/1 in 5 overs and Umar Ali 1/21 in 3 overs.
The Connacht Cup Final will be played in Sligo on the 6th May Bank holiday Monday.
The visitors are the same Ballyhaunis Cricket Club and Sligo would love to repeat the same performance and lift the trophy after many years gap
