Devins brothers shine in fine display at Mullingar

-

BROTHERS Marcus and Matthew DevinsThe Mullingar GP. took place in Multyfarnham on Sunday last. With a return to wet and windy conditions making the roads very slippery. Yeats Country Cycling Club had 2 riders in the youth races. Matthew Devins in the U-16 Race and younger brother Marcus racing the U-14 race.

Up first was Marcus - his race was two laps of a 12km lap with an uphill finish on a rolling course.

Marcus’ race stayed together for the first lap but blew apart on the hill to the finish at the start of the last lap.

Andrew Kelly from Moynalty was the strong rider of the day, winning the sprint from a group of 6.

Marcus Devins was next in taking the sprint for 7th and the first U-13 prize.

Up next was Matthew in the U-16 race. He would cycle three laps of the 12km circuit, totalling 36kms. Matthew, showing no ill effects from his track exploits, attacked early in the race, going clear on the first significant hill on the circuit after about 4kms.

Sean Barrett from O’Leary stone Kanturk was first to react to Matthew’s attack, riding across to him with the other riders struggling to react.

Sean and Matthew came through the first lap with Sean taking the prime (bonus prize).

They had about 20 seconds on the main field with Ryan Geraghty bike worx leading the chase.

On the next lap Matthew took the prime. With Sean tight on his wheel the gap to the main field was now one minute with one lap to go.

Matthew and Sean stayed together for the remaining lap but with 1 km to go Matthew attacked Sean and rode clear arriving at the finish with 20 seconds to spare on a very tired looking Sean with the main field at a further two minutes back.

It was led home by Ryan Geraghty bike worx Dublin.
