DODDY’S GOLF SCRAMBLE

Doddy’s annual Golf Scramble and barbecue was held in aid of Ballymote Nursing Unit, €1,616.50 was raised. Over 20 teams played on the day with a barbecue prepared afterwards by Lorraine Tonry and music with Brendan Lowry. Winning team members were Gerry Scanlon, Mick (The Davo) Davey, John Lavin and Mark Devlin.

A big thank you to our sponsors Kanes SuperValu (who sponsored the barbecue), John Doddy and Josephine Molloy Doddy, thanks also to John Lavin’s Menwear, Roger’s Topline and the Coach House Hotel, who donated prizes. To all the people that helped out on the day – Tott Hoare, Kate Hoare, Ciaran Dennedy, Damien Mullaney, Ballymote Golf Society, Brenda Duffy, David Glynn and special thanks also to John O’Connor, who came out of retirement to make sure the course was in pristine condition.

HERITAGE WEEKEND

The 29th annual Ballymote Heritage Weekend will be held in the Teagasc Centre, Carrownant­y from this Friday, August 3, to Monday, August 6. The lectures, with subsequent audience participat­ion, will take place at 8.30 p.m. each night. These will be as follows.

‘Female Suffrage and the Irish Revolution’ by Prof. Mary Daly UCD; ‘Ireland, a Sacred island before Christiani­ty’ by Alf Monaghan; ‘The Clergy and the First Crusade’ by Malcolm Billings BBC and ‘Sir Charles Coote, the Last Lord Collooney’ by Ballymote man John Coleman M Litt. Coach tours on Saturday, Sunday and Monday will visit Grange and Streedagh (Armada), Creevykeel Court Tomb, Donegal Castle and Abbey, St Attracta’s Holy Well, Clogher, Carrowntem­ple Early Monastery, Ceoláras Coleman, Gurteen, Ballintobe­r Castle and the Old Ballintobe­r Graveyard and Donamon Castle (Divine Word).

BOYLE SUMMER SHOW

The summer Show 2018 will be held again this year, at the Boyle GAA Training Grounds, located at the Warren, the town side of Drumderrig Nursing Home. The location is ideally situated close to the town, on level ground and sheltered from the elements. One of the biggest highlights this year is hosting ‘the all-Ireland Champion Spaniel’ competitio­n for the second time. The Dog Show will be under canvas, so come rain or shine, the dogs will look fantastic. Pony clubs from the region will also be competing for the best pony club accolade, showcasing their expertise in jumping, with all the popular attraction­s and competitio­ns, over 40 stalls and fun for all the family.

HEALTH/WELLBEING CRAFT FAIR

A health and Wellbeing Craft Fair will be held in Boyle in September. The fair will take place in the Spool Factory Event Centre on Sunday, September 9, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is open to all complement­ary therapists, crafters, soap makers, crystals etc. If you are unsure if your craft is suitable please message Lucy below. Family Nature Walk King House (August 23). King’s Trail Bus Tour Grounds King House (August 18 and 25). ‘Gathering’ King House (August 18 to August 25). ‘Dig It’ Archaeolog­y for Children Lough Key Forest Park (August 25).

National Heritage Week 2018 will take place between August 18 to August 26. Coordinate­d by the Heritage Council, National Heritage week is Ireland’s most popular cultural event and this year over 450,000 people are expected to participat­e in over 2,000 heritage events around the country. Over 30 community groups, organisati­ons and individual­s have organised more than 50 events around County Roscommon to celebrate the rich and diverse heritage that is there for us all to enjoy.

Events range from lectures, launches, nature walks, visits to historic houses and gardens, music, poetry and song to family fun events. Many of the events are free and highlight the abundance of great work that is carried out in communitie­s all around County Roscommon including Boyle to care for and promote our built, natural and cultural heritage.

CURLEW WALKERS CLUB

The next meeting of the Curlew Walkers will be Sunday, September 9, meeting on Crescent, Boyle at 10 a.m. and will leave for Leean and Doons. Mary O’Hara was the winner of this year’s Lady Captains Prize, played on Sunday the 15th of July. Mary and the other prize winners were presented with their prizes by this year’s Lady Captain, Marie Hanmore-Cawley at a presentati­on in the clubhouse that evening. Lady Captains Prize To The Men, 1st Vincent Egan 38 points, 2nd Eamonn Perry 37 points, Best Gross Score–Charlie O’Donnell, 3rd–Tom Kearney. Mens Midweek Competitio­n. The 12 hole stableford played on Thursday the 19th was won by Gerry Carty with 29 points, in second was Tom Kearney with 28 and back in the winners enclosure after a few months absence was Cillian Doyle, taking third place with 27 points. The "2s club" was won by Gerry Carty. Interclub. The men of the club recorded a good win over Ballinamor­e in the first round of this years Jack O’Sullivan Trophy. The team is ably captained by Charlie O’Donnell.

JAMES SHIVNAN MEMORIAL CUP–James Shivnan was a very popular member of Boyle Golf Club and since his untimely passing we have played an annual competitio­n for a perpetual trophy in his honour. This year’s competitio­n will be an 18 hole stableford taking place on Sunday the 19th of August with an entry fee of 10 euro for members and 15 euro for visitors. CAPTAINS PRIZE - The biggest event of the year for the male golfers of the club is almost upon us with Terry Canning’s Captain’s Prize for 2018 taking place on Sunday the 29th of July. The competitio­n will consist of an 18 hole strokeplay, with the best scorers qualifying for a 9 hole play-off later that evening with presentati­on of prizes taking place shortly after the end of the play-off. Online booking has opened for this competitio­n with several of the earlier tee-times reserved already.

JUNIOR GOLF IN BOYLE–Junior golf continues on Wednesday’s at Boyle Golf Club and will commence at 6pm.
