IFA CALLS FOR CONSULTATION ON GREENWAYS

-

MR Adrian Leddy, IFA Regional Development Officer said this week that County Councils must sit down with IFA and the local farmers affected so as to participate in genuine dialogue in relation to the plans for Greenways.

IFA highlighted at a protest in Kerry that farmers are totally opposed to CPO’s for Greenways on their land. All Local Authorities must take the threat of CPO’s off the table and start working on voluntary agreements. Mr. Leddy said IFA recognises the value of Greenways for rural tourism and has always been willing to engage in a proactive manner to achieve an outcome that recognises the role of everybody.

The Greenways strategy document places a clear emphasis on local authorities working with communities to deliver recreational routes such as Greenways.

Mr. Leddy said for Greenways to happen, a robust code of practice must be put in place, professional agronomist should be appointed to proposed Greenways, all available public lands must be used and the integrity of farm holdings must be safeguarded.

Mr. Leddy said IFA will always be open to constructive discussions and would happily participate in any forum that gives farmers a genuine hearing. However, he said, that is would have to be designed to address farmers concerns and achieve progress.
