Councillor warns public not to sift through rubbish for ID

- By PAUL DEERING

A county councillor has warned the public not to start sifting through rubbish in a bid to identify the perpetrators and to leave this up to the local authority instead.

Cllr Marie Casserly gave the advice in wake of the tipping of a trailer load of rubbish at Lough Easkey last week which has been cleaned up by the council.

“Sligo County Council cannot discuss or brief the public on individual cases, especially where it may be pursuing a prosecution/enforcement action.

“There is a strict legal process that must be followed in order for the council to have successful outcomes in relation to investigations.

“The most useful thing that a member of the public can do when they encounter illegal dumps is to report it to the council.

“Avoid looking for evidence and most definitely do not remove evidence.

“This should be left for authorised officers from the council to handle and treat appropriately.

“Removing evidence can interfere with the legal processes involved as can the highlighting of these instances on social media,” she said.

Cllr Casserly thanked the council fot is prompt action in the matter.

“This particular area is always very well monitored by local landowners and is exceptionally scenic,” she said.
