Plea to Naughten on Cliffoney Post Office
Councillor Marie Casserly has made a plea to Communications Minister Denis Naughten not to close Cliffoney Post Office.
In a letter to the Minister Cllr Casserly pointed out that Cliffoney has a population of approximately 500 people and a hinterland of many hundreds more.
“Last Monday I saw a lady in a motorised wheelchair enter the Post Office in Cliffoney. What is she and many more like her going to do if this facility closes down? There is also a primary school, a convenience store in the village, a hairdressers, a restaurant, two public houses, a very busy craft shop, a church, funeral parlour, a vibrant weekly farmers market and some tourist accommodation providers.
“Cliffoney is a busy centre and in my opinion the population here and in the wider North Sligo hinterland can sustain such a business. Can you please have this decision reviewed and allow all interested stakeholders to discuss this further with you and the decision makers in An Post is soon as possible,” wrote Cllr Casserly.
She said the cases of Ballygawley and Easkey Post Offices were reviewed last year and urged the Minister to review the decision to close Cliffoney.
