Man (50) on €140k drug rap

A 50-year-old man has been remanded in custody after cannabis worth €135,000 was found in a car he was driving which was stopped in Carrick-on-Shannon on Tuesday evening last.

Gardaí stopped the car at approximat­ely 7:30pm in the Townspark area and arrested Fionntan Fitzgerald, who was on his own, of Main Street in Manorhamil­ton.

A search of the car was carried out and cannabis resin with a street value of €135,000 was discovered.

In a follow up search Gardaí searched the accused’s apartment in Manorhamil­ton and recovered further cannabis resin valued at approximat­ely €5,000 and cash in the amount of €19,250.

The defendant was brought before a special sitting of Sligo District Court on Wednesday evening where evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Detective Garda Gregory McMahon.

Fitzgerald was charged with having cannabis resin for sale or supply.

An applicatio­n for bail was made by Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor but this was opposed by Superinten­dent Kevin English.

Judge Kevin Kilrane refused bail and remanded Fitzgerald, a native of Dublin, who has been living in Manorhamil­ton for the past seven years, to a sitting of Harristown District Court on Friday, August 3rd.

He was further remanded in custody to Harristown District Court on Friday 17 th August.
