The Sligo Champion

New running festival promoting county

-

SLIGO will be the centre of the trail running world this September with adventure seekers arriving to experience the many beautiful and varied trails the county has to offer. Northwest Adventure Tours, RUNPOD and Firefly Foot & Ankle Clinics have teamed-up to launch the inaugural Sligo Trail Running Festival that takes place over the 28th, 29th and 30th of September.

Greater numbers are travelling to the Northwest each year and trail running is the latest activity attracting adventure seekers. Typically trail running is non-competitive with a focus on health, well-being and community, and these are the aims of the Sligo Trail Running Festival.

The festival will see runners tackle 6 trails across the weekend, ranging in length from 6km to 13km and will cover locations such as Benbulben, Knocknarea and Union Wood.

The focus of the event will be on fun and experiencing the beauty of Sligo while building the Sligo trail running community.

County Sligo is the perfect location for trail running with so many accessible and breath-taking trails waiting to reward adventurers with spectacular views and memorable experiences. The festival will add to these experiences by putting a twist on each of the five scheduled trail runs. Details of each of the runs are available from the festival website.

The Festival Hub will take place on the Saturday of the event. There, festival goers will learn about current trends in trail running, footwear and apparel, and how 3D gait analysis technology can prevent injury and improve the athlete’s running performance.

The festival is the brainchild of William Britton of Northwest Adventure Tours and is run in conjunction with RunPod, Sligo’s premium running footwear store and Firefly Foot & Ankle Clinics, both located on Markievicz Road.

A number of trail running groups are active in the region. RUNPOD and Northwest Adventure Tours lead trail running groups to explore spectacular scenic locations such as the Dartry mountain range, Knocknarea and the many hidden coastal and forest routes on our doorstep.

Early bird tickets for the event are on available now from www. sligotrailrunning.ie. Tickets are packaged as accommodation and non-accommodation.

The accommodation package offers 2 nights at the Riverside hotel with breakfast each morning. While the non-accommodation package is ideal for locals who don’t require accommodation, seeking to join in on the festival fun. Visit www.sligotrailrunning.ie
