OUTSTANDING THEATRE

Once again the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company excelled in its presentation of Yeats’ play ‘Purgatory’, on Friday evening last, July 27. Despite the adverse weather, which at one level added to the overall ambience of the performance and despite the fact that the originally advertised time was incorrect, there was a significant crowd, in excess of 100, for the 10 p.m. performance.

Although the fairly persistent rain occasionally challenged the audibility of the actors, the setting was ideal and the special effects outstanding. The fading glory of the Palladian facade of Hazelwood House provided the perfect stage set for a play that involved the arrival of two characters, father and son, at the derelict ruin of their ‘ancestral’ home. The lighting crew had everything laid on, for the ghostly apparitions at the upstairs window and the sound crew had the nightmarish horse’s hooves beating a path through the courtyard, as the drunken master returned home.

In many ways Yeats is not for the squeamish, with the ‘Old Man’, having previously killed his father, then, in the context of the play, killing his son, the ‘Boy’. However, the poetry of the script lifts the scene above the grotesque and allows one to believe that it definitely will require God to ‘Appease the misery of the living and the remorse of the dead.’.

An oustanding night’s entertainment and it was free for the audience. Yeats International summer School and the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company are to be congratulated.
