COMMUNITY GAMES
The Athletic Track at the IT Sligo was a hive of activity for the 2018 Community Games county athletic Track and Field finals. Under glorious sunshine which lasted over the two days event, athletes from all over the parish of Castleconnor took part in a wide variety of events with some participating for the first time. Last year’s games proved to be a very successful and memorable one for the parish having achieved runners-up position for the overall athletic title for the first time in the history of the games in Castleconnor.
Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the games in the parish, the team looked immaculate in the opening parade wearing their customary green white and gold colours under the ever watchful eye of John Ruane (Dooneen). In the opening ceremony Padraic Gavin (Rathmurphy) eloquently delivered the Community Games pledge in English followed by Aisling Mullarkey (Carrownurlar) who enthralled the crowd with a superb performance of Amhrán na bh.
FIANN.
The weekend proved to be another successful one for the parish with the majority making it through from their heats to the semi-finals on Saturday. Several succeeded in qualifying for the finals on Sunday. Some quality performances were evident over the weekend and many of these competitors will be eligible to participate in the same event next year.
A gold medal was won by Ailish Quinn (Ballymooneen) in the girls under-14 Long Puck, Arwen O’Neill (Carrownurlar) in the girls under-14 800m and Eli O’Neill (Carrownurlar) in the boys under-16 100m.
