Protest rally in Sligo on PO

-

A rally will be held in Sligo this Saturday at 2pm to protest at planned post office closures in the county.

The rally is being organised by Councillor Thomas Healywho says “no community is safe from these closures”.

“We have had a number of very well attended local meeting protesting against these closures in Cliffoney, Ballinfull and Gurteen with over a thousand people attending.

“People are coming out in unprecedented numbers on this issue following years of rural decline which includes poor broadband, and closures of banks, Garda barracks and schools.

“Our young people have to emigrate or migrate to find work and year on year the life is being sucked out of vibrant communities. This is the straw that broke the camel’s back and, similar to the water charges campaign, people are taking a stand here.

“I want to bring communities together on this issue so they do not feel isolated and I have got great support for the rally. There will be a wide array of speakers including the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, T.D,s from all the parties, the I.F.A, the Hill Farmers Association, Active Retirement, Community Alert and a speaker from the Donegal campaign,” he said.

The rally will assemble at Connaughton Road at 1.30pm and will walk to the G.P.O for 2pm.

“this is a stand for all of our futures and I am encouraging as many people as possible to come along and support their community,” said Cllr Healy (pictured below).
