Niamh joins Indie artists at Sligo Live

-

SLIGO’S own Niamh Farrell will star in a series of concerts celebrating indie women as part of this year’s Sligo Live Festival.

Lisa Hannigan begins the three concert celebration in the Hawk’s Well Theatre on Friday, 26 th October. The following day, Saturday 27 th October, rapidly rising ensembles Saint Sister and the

Niamh Farrell trio will perform a double bill. Grammy winning folk superstar, Rhiannon Giddens, will round off the Hawk’s Well strand of Sligo Live on Sunday, 28th October.

Niamh’s versatile voice and love for music and singing was instilled from a very young age. Supremely cool and melodic, Niamh is a stunning talent who crosses genres effortlessly. She spent periods as a member of The JP Trio and later of Project West. In 2014 she embarked on a World Tour with singer/songwriter David Gray.

She will be joined for this concert byformer bandmates, Damien Mullane on Box and guitarist Sean O’Meara, both of whom are consummate musician in their own right. Most recently, O Mara toured as a member of jazz/trad fusion supergroup, The Ollam.

Damien, who began his professional career in De Dannan has been described as a virtuoso with an avant-garde playing style.

Lisa Hannigan first came to light as a haunting-voice, somewhat mysterious creature singing harmonies alongside Damien Rice.

But it wasn’t until the release of her solo debut ‘Sea Sew’ in 2008 that the full spectrum of her abilities became apparent.

Her third album ‘At Swim’ follows the double-platinum, Mercury-nominated debut ‘Sea Sew’, and 2011’s ‘Passenger’ (which went to No. 1 and earned Lisa another Choice Music Prize nomination).

‘Sea Sew’ has been described as “easily Lisa Hannigan’s greatest work to date” getting a 9/10 from Hot Press and 4 Stars from Mojo.

Saint Sister’s ethereal performances are impeccable; Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty’s harmonies are so in sync it’s difficult to believe they’re not the same voice. Masters at creating atmosphere, they command the room during performances, and continue to surprise and delight. Saint Sister formed as recently as 2014 and the duo have since supported the likes of Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, and Rodrigo Y Gabriela, played knockout performances at Glastonbury and Electric Picnic.

The indie women join the line-up of Dara O’Briain at the Knocknarea Arena on Thursday, 25 th October, the Boomtown Rats also in the same Arena on Friday, 26 th October.

Audiences will be treated to The Bootleg Beatles at the Knocknarea Arena on Sunday, 28th October.

The Festival Club Upstairs in Andersons will play host to Síomha on Friday, 26 th October and Hudson Taylor on Sunday, 28thOctober. Additional artists will be announced in The Sligo Champion in the coming weeks.
