N17 is a death trap for walkers
Dear Editor,
The recent fundraising event, Walk While You Can, organised in support of the work of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, brought into focus the great dangers that walkers face while travelling on the N17 between Collooney and Charlestown.
The courage of fundraisers who frequently us this road as part of their various North – South challenge events is match only by their bravery in navigating safely this stretch of road.
This section of the N17 in particular, is among the narrowest of any National Route in Ireland. At some points there is little more than the space for two trucks to pass.
All of this means that the route is a virtual death trap for walkers or cyclists.
Taking one’s children for a leisurely cycle is a simple pleasure that local people can no longer enjoy.
The development of the disused railway travelling the same route, from Collooney to Charlestown, into a greenway will provide the perfect solution to the current dangers of the N17. Greenways offer a safe off-road corridor for both cyclists and walkers; the ideal place for family outings and charity events.
