A DAY TO REMEMBER

Once again, last Monday, August 6, the Gods smiled on the community of Newtownmanor for the official unveiling of the historical information plaque, at the foot of O’Rourke’s Table.

Despite a gloomy start to the day, the weather brightened and the sun shone from lunchtime onwards. A mighty crowd of over 150, including many local families and friends, initially gathered at the foot of O’Rourke’s Table for the unveiling, which was carried out by two suitably named gentlemen, Patrick J O’Rourke and Felim O’Rourke.

Proceedings were commenced by local councillor Frank Dolan welcoming all to the area and introducing Seán Conlon, a member of the Dromahair Heritage Group, who provided some very interesting background information to supplement that which is outlined on the plaque.

Following the unveiling, most present, young and old, ascended the 325 steps (number confirmed by the man who maintains them) to the top of O’Rourke’s Table, where they were greeted by the magnificent views that inspired Thomas Moore (Irish poet, singer and songwriter) to pen his famous song, ‘The valley lay smiling before me’; a rendition of which had been given earlier by Betty Duignan from Manorhamilton.

A fine display of Irish dancing was provided by a group of very young dancers, including three of Michael and Mairead Rooney’s children (Annie 10; Joe 8; Paddy 5) from Lurganboy; traditional music being provided by Seán and Bríd Conlon (fiddle and concertina), Patsy Curran (guitar), Aoife Feeney and Chris Curran (flutes). Not to be outdone by their juniors, a few of the adults present provided a couple of sets, ‘Shoe the Donkey’ and ‘The Connemara Set’ and a ‘clap dance’.

Subsequently, an abundance to eat and drink was provided at Newtownmanor Hall, as well as further entertainment by DJ, Brian Kerrigan, and musicians: Seán Farrell (accordian), John Hamilton (fiddle), Gary – (guitar), Aoife Feeney and Chris Curran (flutes). ‘Thank you’ to everyone for turning out on the day and making it such a memorable occasion. An especial word of thanks to those who were involved in the organising of the occasion/event, which will be remembered for many years to come as a wonderful community social gathering.
