RECENT DEATHS

THE death took place on July 28 of Mary Gray, nee O’Dowd, Ballaghade­rreen wife of the late Raymond Gray, Monasterad­en. Her late father Johnny was a native of Curragh, Gurteen. Sincere sympathy is extended to all her family, relations and friends on their bereavemen­t. May she rest in peace.

BINGO

Bingo is held every Friday night in Gurteen Hall at 8.30 p.m. The jackpot is now €3,300 on 49 calls – lotto raffle of €400 – all proceeds are shared between Eastern Harps GAA Club and the hall committee for the upkeep of the hall.

COLEMAN MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Coleman Traditiona­l music festival in Gurteen will take place this year from August 22 to August 26 inclusive. On Wednesday night ‘The Michael Coleman Story’ – a great story with singing and dancing – Thursday night a Junior Music session – all young musicians, singers and dancers are welcome. The official opening night Friday the 24th the Sligo Lasses with Colette and Laura Gaffney, Niamh O’Grady Siobhán O’Donnell and Maureen O’Dowd plus local dancers also the Tiernan Family from Castlebar.

Then Saturday night Ceoltoiri Coleman plus special guests Deirdre and Sylvie Golden will provide the entertainm­ent. A monster session at the Coleman Cottage at Mount Irwin from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday brings the festival entertainm­ent to a close. Festival is organised by the Craobh Coleman Branch CCE.

TIDY TOWNS

Gurteen is in bloom – its great to see how good the village looks with so many hanging baskets, window boxes, the large planner boxes and more – thanks to the combined efforts of home owners, businesses and members of the Tidy Towns Committee. Anyone, who would like to make a donation to the Tidy Towns effort can do so by leaving their contributi­on into the local post office and support would be greatly appreciate­d. Well done to all concerned.

CONCERN

A sincere thank you from Concern in Co. Sligo for the generous donations of €312 at Gurteen church gate collection and €65 at Cloonloo. It is very much appre- ciated.

WALK FOR HOSPICE

Culfadda’S 25th annual Fun Walk in aid of North West Hospice takes place on Sunday, September 9. Registrati­on 12.30 p.m. in Culfadda Hall. TRAD SESSION

There is a traditiona­l session every Friday night in the Crossbar from 9.30 to 11.30 p.m.

SAVE GURTEEN PO

Gurteen Parish Hall was overflowin­g with people – biggest crowd ever seen in the hall – on Thursday night to voice their very strong opposition to the announceme­nt recently that Gurteen post office is on the cards to close.

Speaker after speaker expressed their opinion on the matter and a committee is currently being formed and will fight this decision all the way to ensure the PO remains in the village.
