Celebration of events to mark 200 years
TAUNAGH Church was built in the early 1800s and was consecrated on the 23rd August 1818. This Church replaced the old Church at Taunagh, now a ruin.
The present Church, now two hundred years old is holding a celebration of events on the 17 th, 18th and 19 th August. On the Friday and Saturday there will be a Festival of flowers in the Church with a special display outside.
Cllr. Martin Baker Cathaoirleach of Sligo Co. Coucil will launch the weekend of events at 8pm on Friday 17 th. During the weekend there will be a memorabilia exhibition in the Cooper Memorial Hall to comprise of Sligo items such as books, programmes, prints, delph, coins, first day covers, notes and paintings.
Among the items on display will be a Jack Yeats water colour and pencil drawing, William Bedell’s Bible, 1840 penny black stamp, old coins and notes from the past. Sir Henry Gore-Booth officers uniform and his daughters Constance military uniform, with original christening gown from the family.
700 plus books all related to Sligo from all the well- known authors, most first editions with some signed. 1500 postcards of Sligo and old prints. Posters and artefacts to add to the display.
A Children’s walk will take place on Saturday 18th August at 12noon from the old Church at Taunagh to the present Church in Riverstown.
James Kilbane will be in concert on the Saturday night in the Church at 8pm. (By ticket only).
During the thanksgiving service on Sunday 19 th August at 4pm Dr Breandan Mac Conamhna will read from Bishop Bedell’s translated into Irish original Bible of 1685, Psalm 23 known as David’s song or the Lord is my Shepard.
