Entertaining Sligo
NOCROWS WITH LISA LAMBE AND MARTIN TOURISH
On Sunday the 2nd of September at 8pm, a special performance will take place at the Hawk’s Well Theatre. Wellknown Sligo-based group, NoCrows perform and will be joined onstage by accordionist Martin Tourish and singer/ songwriter Lisa Lambe.
NoCrows is a dynamic folk orchestra from the multicultural melting pot of Sligo’s music scene. Formed over a decade ago by musicians from Sligo’s impressively diverse music scene, NoCrows embrace Irish traditional, jazz, classical and world music styles in equal measure. The presence of Waterboy Steve Wickham in their ranks has drawn them added attention, but they are a multi-instrumental ensemble outfit, who describe themselves – not inaccurately – as a ‘folk orchestra’.
Described by The Irish Times as ‘ the finest singer and actress of her generation’, Lisa Lambe is one of Ireland’s most sought after performers both at home and overseas. Performing regularly at home with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and internationally with different bands and orchestras, Lisa has also performed with a broad range of top artists including Paul Brady, Colin Devlin, Hothouse Flowers, Gabe Dixon, Celtic Woman, John Sheahan, Mundy, Damien Dempsey, Eddi Reader, Declan O’Rourke, Jack L, Mark Geary, Roesy and Peter Bradley Adams.
Dublin-based accordionist, composer and producer Martin Tourish hails from Donegal. Named “Young Musician of the Year” by TG4 in 2008, as a composer, his works have been performed by Altan, Triona Marshall, The Contempo Quartet, Martin Hayes, Paddy Moloney, Seamus Begley, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. In recent years, Martin has recorded film music for Naxos with The National Symphony Orchestra, played venues such as The Royal Albert Hall with The Chieftains and The Grand Ole Opry with Altan. This will be a night of stellar entertainment and definitely one not to miss.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
A ground-breaking photo exhibition is launching on Monday 20 th August at the Teach Bán Art Gallery in Drumcliff.
Titled “Eye- Conic”, the exhibition features the work of a group of photography students from the Mayo Sligo Leitrim ETB (MSLETB). The students successfully completed QQI examinations in Digital Photography at varying levels, with the entire group achieving unprecedented top marks.
The energy and enthusiasm of the students made a deep impression on the group’s tutor Peter Wilcock, of the internationally renowned Redback Photography firm. Peter said: “Their creativity and appetite for knowledge of the Process of Photography astounded me every time I came into contact with them, I looked forward to our weekly meetings as a chance to rejuvenate my own enthusiasm simply by being in close proximity to this red hot core of energy and creativity”.
The exhibition reflects the diversity of the students’ passions, with works ranging from “traditional” shots to the wildly creative and abstract, but all the work has been executed to the highest standards of technique and detail. As well as a comprehensive selection of mounted photos, the exhibition will also feature other works in electronic format, together with the material submitted by the students as part of their QQI requirements.
“Eye- Conic” will be officially opened by Mary Mc Donagh, Public Arts Officer with Sligo County Council, at 6pm on Monday 20 th August at the Teach Bán Art Gallery. The Exhibition runs from Monday 20 th to Saturday 25 th – 11am to 6pm.
