1 THE SIMON GIGS The Simon Gigs 2018 Sligo will be hosted at the Swagman Bar on Friday August 17-19. It’s the 6th event and was created to raise much needed funds for the homeless in Ireland. Artists from all around Ireland perform at the events each year. There will be a busking marathon on O’Connell Street all day Saturday.
2 WHAT CAME IN THE BOAT?
On the first Sunday of Heritage Week 2018 (19 August), Cliadhbh O’Gibne from the Boyne Currach Heritage Group will demonstrate the ancient art of constructing a hide-covered boat using natural materials and techniques at Carrowmore. The event takes place at Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery on Sunday at 12pm.
3 ELVIS: 68 COMEBACK SPECIAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY
It’s been 50 years since Elvis Presley--the undisputed king of rock--performed in his legendary 68’ Comeback concert recorded on December 3, 1968. This event includes, a cinema exclusive, special introduction and studio tour by Steve Binder (the original Producer and Director), including special guest appearances and commentary offering a unique perspective on Elvis and his iconic statu, taking place at Sligo Omniplex on Thursday.
4 THE DEANS AT MCGARRIGLES
Band ‘The Deans’ come to Tricky’s McGarrigles this Friday night, in what is one of their favourite venues, according to themselves. The event kicks off at 9pm and continues until late.
5 AMERICAN COUNTRY ROCK
American Country Rock has found a new home at Kennedy’s Bar Sligo Wed nights 9pm. Classic Country Rock, Loretta, Cash, Dolly, Creedence, Emmylou, The Band, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood, Dixie Chicks, & Springsteen, a few legendary names that will be represented by the house band.
6 A MOVING JOURNEY
‘A Moving Journey’ by artist Bríd Higgins Ní Chinnéide and sculptor John Behan at Hamilton Gallery is now open. In this exhibition, Brid extends her study of the figure and investigates how bodily movement can be portrayed in paint. Motion and movement are at the centre of the work of sculptor John Behan for almost 60 years.
7 THE ÓSTA SESSIONS
The much loved Osta Sessions featuring local musicians Jim Meehan and Felip Carbonell and guests return to the cafe each Thursday evening. Entry is free and Ósta will be serving their delicious light bites, great wines and other beverages.
8 CONSTANCE MARKIEVICZ EXHIBITION Join Sligo Museum as they celebrate the life of feminist and revolutionary Constance Markievicz. The exhibition runs until September 30th.
9 WEEKEND OF WRITING
