THERE were nervous students across the county last Wednesday morning as the much anticipated Leaving Certificate results were out.
Seven hundred and twenty nine Sligo students sat the exams this year.
Around 52 students sat the Leaving Certificate Applied.
Joyous scenes flooded the hallways of Sligo’s secondary schools last Wednesday morning as students flocked to their respective schools to pick up that all important piece of paper. AT Summerhill college, two students achieved over 600 points, but results in general were good. PRINCIPAL, Paul Keogh, said: “We’re very happy with the results. It’s a credit to the students, the staff and the parents too for all of their support. The results are very good across the board.
“I saw that nationally this morning there was a high failure rate in maths but I believe maths was good here. Our students knew their levels and they were well prepared.”
Summerhill College, like many schools, places an emphasis on mock exams earlier in the year to prepare students for the actual exams.
“We have mocks here and they really set the students up for the exams. They know what level exams they should be sitting after that.
“The sciences were good, chemistry was good. Our students had planned it all out very well.”
At the Mercy College, students were pleasantly surprised upon opening up that white envelope.
Danielle Callaghan told The Sligo Champion: “I’m just over the moon with my results. I was so nervous this morning coming in to pick up the results I was crying.”
Maths seemed to be the biggest concern for most students, but all schools in the area were pleased with the grades achieved in maths, both higher and ordinary level.
Danielle added: “I was most worried about maths, I was just so worried.I did so much better than I had expected to do.”
Amy Conlon was also concerned about higher level maths, but when she opened her results she realised that she had been worrying about nothing.
“I’m very happy. I was very nervous coming in to collect the results but I know I’m going to college now so I’m happy. I’m hoping to do accountancy and finance.
“I was so pleased with maths. I did Higher Level and I though I had failed. I did much better than I had expected.”
Mackenzie Ellwood achieve six H1s, which is the top grade. She was at a loss for words.
“I’m delighted with how I did. I can’t say anything else I’m just shocked with it.
“I did way better than I had expected to do. I’m hoping to do Law & Politics and I didn’t expect to get the points for that, which was 580 last year.
“I would appear to have the points for it so hopefully. I didn’t sleep much last night.
“I was most worried about maths and biology but I’m so relieved now to see that I got those.”
