Big turn out sends a clear message to the Government

- By JESSICA FARRY

IT’S time to shout ‘stop’ and save our services - that was the message from Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy, the main organiser of Saturday’s protest against post office closures.

“It’s time for change and the only ones that can do this is the community who are willing to stand up for themselves, their county and the future of rural Ireland,” Cllr. Healy said.

“The community came together to show that they are willing to fight to keep post offices open in their villages,” he added.

Hundreds turned out for the rally, and participants were not just from Sligo, but from the whole north west region.

Cllr. Healy continued: “This is just not about Sligo, this will affect the whole country and the fabric of our society in rural Ireland.

“What lies ahead for generations is up to us we can’t just let our town and villages close up.

“First the Garda station, then the banks and now the post offices. Next it will be the schools and bus service.

“When you can see semi state bodies saying that they can close post offices down because the population is under a certain number - this is very worrying that the present government is happy to let this happen.”

Ballinfull, Dromard, Gureen and Monsteraden are all set to lose their post offices.
